Spindle Clutches

The engineers at Brown & Sharpe knew that the spindle clutch would experience extreme wear at the limits of the machine design parameters. They needed a superior clutch material. Clutches machined from flat plate clutch material was good enough for other machine tools. But they needed better. The answer was Tufnol molded to the clutch backing plate. By molding it in place over the steel insert, the fiber in the clutch material would lie in the correct direction for superior service life. You don’t get this from a clutch that is cut from flat plate clutch material.
